About us

Seven directories, one small team, thirty years of checking

Visit New England is a set of regional travel directories that has been running since 1996. Every listing is written or reviewed by a person before it goes live, and the same small team has run the site for the last fifteen years. It is paid for by the businesses that appear on it, not by anyone who visits.

Our story

We started before search engines. Still checked by hand.

Visit New England began in 1996 as a single page of places to stay along the Maine coast, typed up by hand and changed whenever an innkeeper wrote in. Most of the businesses on it had no website of their own, so for a while this was their website.

The other five states followed, and the network settled into the shape it still has: seven directories that share one set of listings, one small editorial team and one rule. If it goes on the site, a person has read it first.

Search engines now bring nearly all of our readers, and they arrive looking for something specific: a covered bridge, a sugarhouse, somewhere to sleep near Acadia. The job has not changed. Describe the place plainly, get the phone number right, send them on.
