This nonprofit environmental organization offers plenty of opportunities to do just that at its year-round locations in Providence and Newport, RI. At its Bay Center in Providence, you can explore shoreline trails, enjoy the fishing cove and public dock, or even hop on board a Lighthouse Tour (June through October). In Newport, you can stop by their interactive Hamilton Family Aquarium to check out sea urchins, horseshoe crabs, skates, sharks and more. A spectacular frozen fantasy for the young – and young at heart

This frozen fortress is the perfect place to make unforgettable memories as a family. But the fun doesn’t end when the sun goes down. In fact, there’s always a spectacular light show at night, as LED lights embedded inside the ice turn the castles from brilliant shades of blue, to vibrant red, purple, and green. Families are advised to buy tickets online in advance (you can spend as much time as you like once you’re inside), to dress warmly with boots, and to consider a small sled instead of a stroller for really little ones. There’s also a concession stand with hot chocolate, cider, and warm treats.

In the Museum, exhibits tell the history of the river from Indigenous peoples through the 20th century, and describe its environmental impact and how it has been used over the years, from a power source for mills to quarrying and fisheries and for recreation. Outside the Museum building, you can board the re-created 1614 sailing vessel Onrust for an afternoon or evening cruise (or explore the unique ship at the dock) or board the 64-foot RiverQuest eco-tour boat for scenic tours of the river. Every passenger is offered binoculars for better viewing and kid-sized binos are always available. Check the calendar for a series of cruises designed just for kids and their families throughout the season. Everyone will have an opportunity to use binoculars, learn nautical terms, and birdwatch.

The farm, which dates back to 1791, offers regular events (check the website for specific times and dates) and a farm store with everything from cider donuts to apples and Vermont-made gifts. Sample baked goods or sandwiches at Pippin’s Café and wander the incredible Stone Wall Park. A public fishing pier consists of a long wooden walkway from the blacktop path out to a main deck 13 feet above the water. Leashed dogs are permitted in the park. Movies are shown on the lawn in the summer.
ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center

A visit to ECHO is a wonderful science and ecology expedition for children and families. Lots of expert work has gone into creating permanent exhibits about the ecology, wildlife, plant life, and Native human inhabitants of the region. Plenty of changing exhibits and fun seasonal activities to encourage kids to get involved in this fascinating maritime world. ECHO is open year round, 10am - 5pm daily, except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve & Day.
